French and German are taught to 11-13 year old students in key stage 3, 14-16 year old students in key stage 4 and 17-18 year old students in key stage 5. Topics covered on training include:

Subject Specific Aims:The following aims are in addition to the overall aims stated in the Grand Union Training Partnership.

• To increase awareness amongst Associate Teachers of their crucial role in raising MFL standards.
• To enable Associate Teachers to develop in all their learners positive attitudes towards other languages and cultures. 
• To encourage Associate Teachers to incorporate an intercultural dimension into their teaching which will enrich the learning of their pupils. 
• To develop knowledge and understanding of the role of Modern Foreign Languages in the whole curriculum, with particular reference to the National. 
• To provide opportunities to develop effective teaching and assessment strategies in the Modern Foreign Languages classroom, focusing on appropriate planning, methodologies and organisation of the learning environment. 
• To consider the role and relationship of teachers and learners in the Modern Foreign Languages classroom, with particular reference to individual differences, teaching and learning styles, differentiation and the management of pupils behaviours

Training for each subject is undertaken through a number of twilight sessions and subject training days held in the various schools throughout the academic year. Potential Associate Teachers wishing to embark on the training programme must possess a relevant degree and grade C, or above, in Maths and English at GCSE. Relevant experience may also be considered.
